Diabetes is a metabolic disease
characterized by a chronic hyperglycemia (elevated glucose levels in blood),
which can lead to lethal acute complications and long-term degenerations,
affecting several organs like the eye, the kidney, the nervous and vascular systems,
opening the path for blindness, kidney failure, the loss of limbs sensitivity, etc
.
The majority of diabetic patients are
affected with type 2 diabetes; this type is marked by the risen resistance to
insulin (major hormone that decreases glucose level) and the imbalance between
insulin and glucagon secretions.
Obesity, sedentariness
and diabetic heredity (presence of many diabetic family members) are the main
risk factors, so if you have one of these or more, these following advices may
help you avoid diabetes, or at least, slow its progress and keep you away from
its complications:
Healthy diet: make sure to avoid sugar, processed food and refined carbohydrates from
your diet, as they are quickly broken into glucose and absorbed, thus the
hyperglycemia occurs in presence of insulin deficiency or resistance, therefore
replacing refined carbohydrates by food with low glucose index (food that
doesn’t induct an important insulin response like high-fiber diet) is the right
choice for your health.
Regular work out: Physical exercise improves the
insulin sensitivity of human tissues and insulin/glucagon balance. Less insulin
is required to keep your blood sugar levels under control during exercise which
may help prevent diabetes occurrence.
Weight loss: the excess of adipose tissue
favors the insulin resistance and urges diabetes, so in case of overweight or
obesity, losing weight should be a priority in the diabetes fight arsenal.
